Student Success Librarian for Information Literacy University of Tennessee
The University of Tennessee, an R1 institution situated in Appalachia, serves a large Appalachian population and community according to its land-grant mission. To support research in this area, the University Libraries intentionally collect Appalachian literature and materials, providing a microcosm of the region’s lore. This poster explores the representation and narrative of Appalachian identity across the circulating monographs in this collection. Using Library of Congress subject headings that contain “Appalachia” or “Appalachian”, including “Appalachian People” and “Appalachian Region” researchers will identify titles comprising the Appalachian collection. This collection will then be assessed for trends in content to develop a narrative concept, essentially detailing what messaging the collection communicates about Appalachia when viewed as a whole.
