Through a multi-disciplinary team effort, we developed a graduate certificate program in geospatial information science (GIS) hosted by the university libraries. The certificate program is an effective way to increase the visibility of library’s instruction contribution on campus, and recognize students’ achievements via their information-focused learning. The development of the certificate includes geospatial information competency evaluation, the trend and market analysis, as well as a comprehensive evaluation of campus existing courses that are in relevant areas. Through these exercises, we were able to identify the curriculum gaps and develop library’s instruction program that can lead to a certificate program. The program was available from Summer 2021 with continuous students enrollment. To date, there are 57 students from different colleges with different academic status applied for the program. Five students graduated by Spring 2022. They have indicated that the certificate program put them in a better position on the job market. The libraries instruction helped them better understand the information workflow and technology, as well as critical thinking skills.
