Distinguished Practitioner in Residence, Professor of Practice

Cindy Aden, former Washington State Librarian, was appointed to the University of Washington iSchool in August, 2020 as the third Distinguished Practitioner in Residence, Professor of Practice. In this position, an endowed chair by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Cindy is teaching graduate library students and is working with Dr. Sandy Littletree on a Mellon Foundation-funded research project on tribal libraries. Cindy is also the newly named Chair to the governing board of the Schools, Health, Libraries Broadband Coalition (SHLB), a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. that advocates and educates on behalf of better broadband access to anchor instituitons. Cindy has also worked in business development for OCLC; as tenured faculty at the University of Washington Libraries, including the Gallagher Law Library; at the Library of Congress, as an intern and Congressional Research Librarian; and as an Associate Director at the Kitsap Regional Library system in charge of system-wide reference and information services. Her undergraduate degree is from Stanford University in International Studies, and her graduate MLIS is from the University of Washington.
