In this proposal, we are presenting research that is recently completed which looks into the ways in which we can better understand the mental health needs and wellbeing of library and information studies PhD students. These students will eventually become LIS instructors and scholars. We want the best for our profession. Mental health can be a secretive and embarrassing thing in our community. However, we hope to reach and hear from our colleagues. In this poster, we seek to understand the ways in which library and information studies doctoral students take care of their mental health and what supports are needed to improve their well-being. The PhD program can be a challenging, frustrating, and mentally taxing endeavor. This project aims to shed some light on how doctoral students are/or are not taking care of themselves during their tenure in the PhD program. The goal of this project is to demonstrate that LIS PhD students have significant needs that should be addressed. Healthier young scholars leads to thoughtful, empathetic, and more compassionate instructors and scholars.
