Music & Performing Arts Librarian University of Florida
Free Little Libraries are now an established phenomenon in neighborhoods and public spaces. During the pandemic, there were sightings of a parallel phenomenon--the Free Little Art Gallery, or FLAG. Some of these were set up like small dioramas of museum spaces, complete with tiny masterpieces and patron figures. Others provided, like the Little Free Libraries, a place for sharing, viewing, and free acquisition of small pieces of original art. This poster will detail the development and operation of a Free Little Art Gallery within the University of Florida Architecture & Fine Arts Library. Seeded initially by creative library staff, this maker-friendly initiative invites participation by arts and design students as well as others who use our library space--as contributors, receivers, viewers. Goals the project include sparking enjoyment, experiential learning, and participant exposure to original art. Our poster will share goals, policies, procedures, and visual documentation of contributed artwork, and details of social media engagement.
