Institutional archives are often home to unique and unexpected items. The Jones-Pritchett Archive was home to aging and deteriorating game film from the now defunct Football program at Lees-McRae College. Using funds from a Bright Ideas grant awarded by the State Library of North Carolina, librarians at Lees-McRae had that film digitized so that it is now preserved and easily accessible to library users. Librarians also used the films to host an event at the 2022 Homecoming celebration that allowed alumni from the football program to feel connected despite the elimination of the athletic team. This poster will cover how the Lees-McRae College librarians went about selecting and digitizing the historic game film from 1959-1982 and the ways in which that project spawned events and programs to connect with the local community and alumni. The poster will also include the process for identifying unique collections in any institutional archive and ways that librarians and archivists can use those to connect with a wider community, to start new collaborations, and to lead fundraising efforts.
