Cybersecurity has been a major, growing concern for higher education and other organizations in Canada, the United States and other countries and regions in the world. How shall libraries respond to this challenge? How can they secure their systems and the information managed and stored in these systems while maintaining the availability of library systems and services to their users? This poster will introduce the concept and trend of cybersecurity along with the cyber landscape, including the incidents, threats, and challenges to higher education and other organizations. Cybersecurity strategies and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework will be illustrated and applied to the library context. Academic libraries will be used to exemplify the approaches, actions and best practices for libraries to secure their systems. The principles would be applicable to public, special, and other types of libraries as well. The roles of library professionals in this area will be discussed, including advocating, advising and educating various library stakeholders on cybersecurity related concepts and principles. The authors will share their practical experiences handling major cybersecurity breaches in recent years, and tips for libraries to set up goals, make assessments, and develop action plans to enhance their cybersecurity status.
