The Newborn Mortality Rate (NMR) in Tanzania was estimated at 21 per 1,000 in 2018 and reductions were estimated to 2% annually since the year 2000 (UN-IGME modeled estimates). While results are very encouraging, if there were 1,000,000 births each year then 21,000 newborn babies could die of lack of care.
This project objectives of this project include: - To empower the community of health workers across the country to advocate their profession by improving adherence to clinical guidelines. - To sensitize community members by raising awareness of pregnant women's danger signs and child preparedness practices.
The proposed solution has two integrated systems - Lifeguards web application Provides a platform for clinical staff across the country to connect, share experiences, get access to health guidelines, and visualize data for decision-making processes. - Mamatoto SMS system This is a free SMS system that targets pregnant women in both rural and urban areas, community members, and clinical staff who do not have access to the internet or smartphones. It provides reminders on important dates to pregnant women such as dates to visit the clinic and the expected date of delivery. It also provides different updates and information like danger signs during pregnancy, materials, and tools to be used during/after delivery.
Expected outcomes: The proposed system will empower health workers nationwide to promote their profession through improved adherence to guidelines and educate communities on pregnancy-related topics such as clinic attendance, danger signs, and other maternity-related information.
