The 2018 and 2023 UHLS [Upper Hudson Library System] Library Expedition models offer an engaging, fun way for users to learn about libraries and understand the benefits available to them through library cooperation or affiliation. Riffing on the well-known “Become a 46er” slogan of the local upstate New York Adirondack Mountain Club, the Expedition’s “Become a 36er” slogan has inspired and delighted a broad swath of library users in two counties. Over 3000 people participated in the 2018 Expedition, and 375 people completed the Expedition, earning a hugely-coveted VIP Library Gold card. A local comics artist delivered an eye-catching poster, bumper sticker, map, buttons, pin, sticker and other pieces used as prizes and promotions. Samples, along with news coverage, convey the structure and excitement of the project. Evaluation materials include testimonials, survey responses, and participation statistics. Photos of participants with libraries’ clever selfie stations, legislator Expeditions, and the "library love fest" end party in a local park, held months after the end of the first Expedition at the clamoring of participants, tell the story. Strategies for developing personalized library tour challenges are offered.
