Head of Research & Learning Support Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
Introduction: Academic librarians are increasingly called upon to fill new roles and teach students new skills; skills that may be new to the librarians!
This poster will explain how librarians at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, spurred on by near-future requirements of a government funding body, created a self-learning program in 2020-21 and 2022-23 to build their own skills and knowledge to teach graduate students Data Management Planning. The librarians also used those skills to customize and enhance their local version of DMPTool and guidance documents.
We will share: * What We Did - How we created and conducted a self-learning program across two academic years to prepare for the challenges. * Three Learning Outcomes Achieved: - Identified a set of data management related terminologies likely to confuse researchers & prepared to change or explain them - Identified a selection of subject specific public DMPs from DMPTool.org or DMPonline to use as examples for DMP teaching and evaluation examples for self-learning and teaching - Created and improved HKUST’s DMP template, including revising written guidance incorporating the FAIR Principles.
Poster’s expected impact: - This poster can help other librarians who need to boost their own DMP skills and knowledge, or as an example of self-learning by librarians that could be applied to other needs.
